KUALA LUMPUR: An elderly man was shocked when he received a notice from Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) claiming that he owed nearly RM700,000 for electricity usage.
Wu Tuan Chiang, 71, said TNB claimed that the meter of the shoplot he had rented out had been tampered with.
He said they suspected that the shoplot had been used in a bitcoin mining operation.

Shop owners slapped with high electricity bills
Thirty six shop owners were shocked when they were slapped with unpaid electricity bills from Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) ranging between RM 100,000 and RM 500,000.
Owners who rented out commercial shoplots at Wangsa Maju, Semenyih and Saujana Rawang, were issued backdated bills after their respective units were raided by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) on separate occasions since August last year, where meters were found to have been tampered with.

Yes, installations is currently only available for Kuala Lumpur and Selangor area.
Installation fees ranged from RM 120 – RM 300 depending on preferred method of connections. Do contact us for more details.
Yes a 2.4 GHz wifi is necessary for the remote function of the Smart Meter.
In any case that WiFi is disconnected, the Smart Meter will continue to work in recording the electricity usage and credit deduction.
However, you won’t be able to access or control the Smart Meter when the internet is offline. The Smart Meter will reconnect immediately once the Internet goes online.
You may also opt for portable broadband with SIM card data. Can be purchased from Lazada, Shopee or telecommunications center.
There are 3 options:
- Tenants pay you and you reload.
- Tenants reload through the APP, but there is a processing fee of RM 2.50. Money will be transferred to you in 4 days.
- Mix and match 1 and 2 as you see fit.
